This is our annual non-native cattail clearing event to preserve open water in the West Wetland/Chatterton Marsh area.
We will be removing the non-native Hybrid Cattail (Typha x glauca) and Narrow-leafed Cattail (T. angustifolia) which have taken over large areas which were previously shallow open water. We will not be removing the native Broad-leafed Cattail (T. latifolia), which is an important species in the marsh ecosystem.
The ultimate goal of this project is to enhance biodiversity by restoring the balance between shallow open water, native cattail marsh and native bulrush marsh which has been disrupted by intrusion of the non-native cattails.
