The History of the Rithet's Bog Conservation Society

Our society was originally set up in 1990 as a citizen advisory group to help Saanich Council find a way of preserving Rithet’s Bog as park land.  Later in 1990 the group incorporated as the Rithet’s Bog Preservation Society and became a registered charity.  In 1994 the bog was donated to Saanich by the Guiness family and in 1995 it became a Saanich park and was zoned as a nature sanctuary.  Our society’s focused then shifted from preservation to conservation and restoration of the park’s ecosystems, especially the wetlands.  In recognition of this shift in purpose, the society’s name was changed in 1997 to the Rithet’s Bog Conservation Society.
