The work site is currently flooded by the recent rain, so Saanich staff cannot do the initial cutting of non-native cattails. We will reevaluate the situation next week to determine if we can proceed or need to develop an alternative plan.

We will post developments on this page as they become available. Thank you for your patience.

This is our annual non-native cattail clearing event to preserve open water in the West Wetland/Chatterton Marsh area.

We will be removing the non-native Hybrid Cattail (Typha x glauca) and Narrow-leafed Cattail (T. angustifolia) which have taken over large areas which were previously shallow open water.  We will not be removing the native Broad-leafed Cattail (T. latifolia), which is an important species in the marsh ecosystem.

The ultimate goal of this project is to enhance biodiversity by restoring the balance between shallow open water, native cattail marsh and native bulrush marsh which has been disrupted by intrusion of the non-native cattails.
