Natural History

Rithet's Bog is home to a wide variety of birds and butterflies. To help you enjoy your time at Rithet's Bog we have created two checklists for your use.

Rithet’s Bog Bird Checklist

  • Compiled from a weekly survey conducted November 2003 to November 2004.
  • Birds are presented in taxonomic order, following The Sibley Field Guide to Birds of Western North America, 2003.

Rithet's Bog Butterfly Species List

  • Compiled during monthly butterfly counts, 1992 – 2005 (Karen Golinsky and Sharon Hartwell)
  • With thanks to James Miskelly for supplying information on larval host plants.

Swallow Boxes

Swallow Box

Swallows return to the island to nest each spring, and we have provided homes at the bog for these graceful, insect-eating birds. Knowledgeable volunteers have built nest boxes customized for Violet Green Swallows, and mounted them on signposts throughout the park.

Our primary goal is to promote natural mosquito control by increasing the resident swallow population, but these nest boxes will also provide wonderful wildlife viewing opportunities.
